My "dai pai dong" experience

東寶小館 Tung Po

In Hong Kong there are some really, really good places to eat at but unless you’re a local some of these places are hard to find. So I am very blessed to have made some wonderful friends in Hong Kong who are such big foodies! I've been dying to have my first "dai pai dong" experience in Hong Kong. A Dai Pai Dong is characterized by its open/outdoor kitchen and mostly outdoor seating under some sort of makeshift awning in case of rain, but because of health reasons and government regulations a lot of dai pai dongs have been shut down. Lucky for me the place V took us to still exist. The dai pai dong we went to is situated on top of a wet market therefore they always have fresh seafood available.

The place was packed and the atmosphere was awesome, they cranked up their music and the aroma of fresh seafood is just so inviting! I can’t even begin to describe how good each dish tasted! I just wished we had more people so I could have ordered more food!

V started us off with a plate of sliced cucumbers and diced squid it was served cold with a creamy wasabi sauce. This was a very good appetizer because it was very refreshing and the wasabi opened up my appetite for more! I highly recommend trying this place out because I will definitely go back again.

Steamed clams with white wine

Deep fried shrimp (I am not sure what it was covered with)

Scallops steamed with a garlicky soy sauce with vermicelli

Very Crispy Chicken & Gai Lan in a fish soup

Sticky rice

And this is how I ended my night... with some sweet tofu

The Spaghetti House HK

I have a tendency to have a lot of random cravings. Sometimes I would crave for a juicy cheeseburger or chicken wings or raw oysters or a mango milk tea... the list can go on forever! So after being in Hong Kong for a couple of months I started to crave for pasta. I have asked some friends of mine wheres a good place to go for pasta and a lot of them couldn't really think of any restaurants to refer me to. So I guess to satisfy my pasta craving T and I visited The Spaghetti House, the one located some where in TST.

We ordered their lasagna and two of their mini late afternoon tea sets. We chose a baked spaghetti bolognese and the baked fish fillet pasta in a cream sauce. Both our mini sets came with a lobster bisque and a drink. The lasagna and lobster bisque was really well done, the lasagna was really cheesy (which I like), the pasta was cooked perfectly (firm with a nice bite to it) and the meat sauce wasn't runny at all.

The lobster bisque had a really nice puff pastry and the soup was very creamy.
I would definitely order this again.

I loved their lasagna but their two baked pastas was a little disappointing. Both the baked pastas were hard and chewy and when I mean chewy I don't mean the Al dente kind of chewy. The Spaghetti House does have a good selection of pastas and pizzas I guess its a matter of trial and error. They also have a cheese fondue which I am very curious about, so I guess when E is in Hong Kong I would probably drag her back here to try it.

I still crave for pasta, but I might have to wait till I am back in Vancouver
unless someone has a good suggestion?

The Roundhouse Hong Kong

Christmas Eve Dinner

Instead of a roast turkey and stuffing for the holidays, we had a Budweiser Beer can roast chicken. I swear if you have dinner at the Roundhouse and have never tried this chicken, I highly recommend it.

The chicken was so juicy and tender and its just so fun seeing it stuffed with a beer can!

Meet Seven!

Hello! This is my first attempt at editing/creating a video.
This is our little friend Seven, he is an 8 week old Schnauzer.

Kobe Beef & Clay Pot

Kobe Beef BBQ @ Tsim Sha Tsui

T's friend recommended this place, and I have never had Kobe beef before. So after trying this place out, I am happy to announce that I can actually taste the difference between the cuts of beef we ordered, but unfortunately I cannot read Chinese so I cannot tell you what cuts of meat we had. Our server did explain the meal to us, but he spoke so fast that I could barley pick out a sentence, and it didn't help much when he was talking to the floor most of the time. I really wish I could read the Chinese menus because the English menus in most restaurants just isn't the same.

Clay Pot @ Causeway Bay

I really enjoy eating clay pot rice, this is the only place I tried so far in Hong Kong so I have nothing to compare it to. I ordered minced beef with egg and Chinese sausage. I also ordered a "lai tong" which is their house special soup. I thought it was a little disappointing because it was lukewarm and over salted, but I will definitely come back for its clay pot, if anyone has any recommendations please let me know!

Toodles~

A Repeat.

A month ago I had an issue with blogger, where a lot of my pictures were not displaying and I had to spend several days re-uploading all my pictures but the thing is I couldn't recover all my posts because I didn't back-up my pictures when I had my lap top reformatted.

Well I was looking through my tumblr and luckily I found these! These pictures were taken during Chinese New Year 2011 and this meal was cooked by our mama!

Sorry if some of you have already seen these pictures, but this is by far one of my favourite meals made by my mama.

Enjoy!
